VOICE OF GOLD

California Institute of the Arts, 2026

Installation

Voice of Gold investigates the architecture of power through imaging financial systems, and data-driven sound compositions.

On this side of the wall in one section of the installation there is a two-way mirror with a camera that captures viewer's image as they enter the room which is then projected as a delayed video feed into a dark room on the other side of the wall of the installation. As viewers look through another work their vision is mediated by a 3D printed screen of the NYSE building plan, through which they see a dark room in which their image is projected as a delayed live feed in the space that is not accessible to them.

To create the sound in this work I fed the stock price data of the price of gold of into a digital synthesizer, which was then processed through an AI model trained on human vocal performances from classical songs. The AI effectively uses the numerical stock price data to generate melodies becoming a mediator for market activity. I understand the representational screens of the Whitehouse floor plan and New York Stock Exchange in this work as sites of mediation and painting as a vehicle for investigating (through representation) the financial, and social, systems that facilitate the circulation of power.
