SECURITIES
Middle Space, 2025
SECURITIES examines the construction of value through painting, drawing on historical financial institutions in the Midwest, U.S.—notably the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Floor (now housed at the Art Institute of Chicago) and the State Savings Bank in Detroit.
While the frame supports of the paintings are 3D printed, the screen-like representations alternate between machine construction and hand construction, pursuing questions of authorship and mediation. In a time where this is much talk of what it means to be generative and intelligent the confusion of these methods brings up a tension between the human hand and the mechanical, a relationship that might be particularly poignant in a post-industrial city.
